The optional subject, which is comprised of 500 marks from the 2025 marks, has been made compulsory for all candidates who wish to take the Civil Services exam. The selection process for this prestigious job sector will be a lot easier for those who have studied this subject. It helps in understanding the concepts and theories behind public administration and develops critical thinking skills. Moreover, it also helps in developing analytical abilities. This makes candidates competent enough to work in various departments in the government. While studying this subject, one must make sure that they are well-versed with current affairs as they will be asked questions based on them during the written examination.

Once the Preliminary stage is cleared following the Preliminary stage, the next step for candidates is to take the Main exam. The mains test comprises of nine different papers including Four General Studies papers, two papers on Optional Subjects (Paper VI as well as Paper VII) and one paper on Essay , and two qualifying papers from mother tongue as well as an English paper.

The optional subject is comprised of 500 marks from 2025 marks and plays an important role in getting an admission into the Civil Services exam.

Medium:

Selecting the optional for civil service

Selecting of the IAS Mains Optional always puts Civil Services aspirants in a spot to bother. the number of optional subjects to be selected at the moment is one, but aspirants are always divided on what represents the right choice. Among the many things that need careful consideration are

  1. whether to go with subjects that have large weightage in GS papers.
  2. To go with interest oriented subjects or so called high scoring subjects.
  3. Finally, are small syllabus subjects worth a try as linguistics, since a lot of toppers in last few years opted for linguistics.
  4. Disproportionate impact - Though the weightage of the optional paper is only roughly a quarter out of 1750 marks ( total for civil service exam).

but students at times score 35-40% of their total score.

What kind of selection for Optional will affect your chances in IAS Mains?

Even if you're strong in GS papers, it would be foolish to focus on optional. It is hard to get at 45% in GS however one could score 60% on optional and that is the norm for the top students.

Long-term preparation is a major factor in determining whether you are above average or below.

Selecting an option that has heavy weightage for mains GS is the most effective Strategy?

The truth is that it's effective however, don't select an option just to be a bit more convenient.

Always remember to do this

Other aspects that need to be taken into consideration Other aspects to be considered

INTEREST IN A SUBJECT SHOULD BE PARAMOUNT, in deciding your optional.

Do not choose an optional subject with an overly complicated syllabus.

Don't ignore the degree of the comfort.

Check the length of time that is available prior to the test.
